The African Network for Localis ation (ANLoc) - Localise Software sub-project is excited to announce a call for language teams to localise software into TEN African languages.
ANLoc Localise Software sub project is embarking on a new localisation initiative and is urgently seeking language teams.
ICT is necessarily adapted to human languages in order to enable its use by non-specialists. For historic and economic reasons, however, certain languages dominate in this role, regardless of where ICT is used. So, when technology is used where the language and culture are different, it will exert an unintentional influence on the latter that could be negative. Localisation – the adaptation of ICT to the language and culture where it is used – allows that cultural pressure to be reduced, eliminated or even reversed.
By addressing the issue of localisation ANLoc and its sub-projects aim to address these dimensions to indeed turn ICTs into a positive force for all of the above dimensions.
Context of the project
The goal of the Localise Software sub-project is to localise existing Open Source projects into ten African languages.
The ten language teams will be assisted with a small team of technical experts, who will help them with the different localisation processes for each of the software they will be localising.

- Pootle (online localisation tool)
- Virtaal (multi platform offline localisation tool)
- GlossMaster (terminology tool)
Call for language teams applications
We are calling for language teams who want to localise the above list of software into any African language:
The project period is from September 2009 to April 2010, including localisation, review, testing, communication with software developers, releasing the localised software and promoting it.
The Localise Software budget is up to USD2,500 per language team, which covers all costs related to the project for its entire duration, including promoting the localised software in your community.
We accept applications from individuals and organisations. You should apply as a language team. All applications should identify a team lead.
To localise the above list of software, that involves the following tasks:
- Translating the strings of each of those software projects
- Getting involved with the development/localisation teams of each of those software projects
- Communicating with ANLoc Localise Software Tech Team
- Actively participating in a collaborative process with the Tech Team and the other language teams, sharing tips, helping each other and documenting this process.

- 15 September 2009: Translation of Firefox phase 1 (includes 4000 words)
- 22 September 2009: Review of Firefox phase 1
- 29 September 2009:
- Fixes of Firefox phase 1 according to review
- Translation of Firefox phase 2 (includes 3500 words)
- 2 October 2009:
- Language pack
- Review of Firefox phase 2
- 1 November 2009:
- Translation and review for Firefox phases 3 to 6 (includes 5700 words)
- Communicating with Mozilla on recognizing the new language
- 1 December 2009:
- Translation and review for Pootle (includes 1500 words)
- Translation and review for Virtaal (includes 1500 words)
- Translation and review for GlossMaster (includes 500 words)
- 28 February 2010:
- Translation and review for the remaining Firefox phases
- Communicating with Mozilla until becoming an official language
- Translation and review for Fennec (includes 1100 words)
- March 2010: Promotion and distribution of localised software in your community.

Successful applicants should have:
- Experience in localising software.
- Proficiency in at least one African language in which they will be localising
- Proficiency in one of these languages (English/French/Portuguese)
- Ability to read and communicate in English.

The African Network for Localisation (ANLoc)
ANLoc's mission is to empower Africans to participate in the digital age by removing the last inch limitations imposed on language usage by the limitation of technology.
In order to do this technology needs to be enabled. Tools need to be built that make localisation more effective that help the translator or the relating fields that assist translators. Training needs to be provided and developed that increase the African localisation skills level. The status of the language policy as it relates to localisation and to the usage of ICTs in local languages needs to be influenced.
We are achieving this by creating a network of African languages localisers who through various projects address these needs. This network and the sub-projects developed by its members are focused on empowering African languages practitioners to be skilled in these areas, forgoing short-term advances to ensure that African expertise is created for future localisation development.
